Cover Story: The Strength of Convent School Education

Jamshedpur, the city that just a few years ago, raced ahead of Bangalore, Pune and Chandigarh to get international acclaim when it was selected by the United Nation as the best ‘Global Compact City’ in the world, now has another reason to feel proud: Carmel Junior College (CJC). Fairly new in the field of
education, CJC stunned onlookers when in May this year, it raced ahead all other contenders to win the Dr. J.J. Irani Award for Excellence in Education.

Schools play the most vital role in developing the personality of citizens who then proceed to play their part in the growth and development of a country. With this in mind Tata Steel had embarked upon the enthusiastic task of bringing excellence into education through a Tata Steel Education Excellence Initiative. Schools were invited to apply through an application where schools were assessed against the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria which includes categories of leadership, strategic planning, student and parent focus, information and analysis, faculty and staff focus, process management and organizational performance results. Carmel Junior College got the highest points among the schools analyzed.

The smiling face behind the success of CJC belongs to Sister Flavian. If Julie Andrew was (in Sound of Music) the ‘singing nun”, then Sister Flavian can be called the ‘smiling nun’ – you rarely encounter her without that trademark smile that radiates true inner purpose and contentment. MENTOR’s Naina Sultan Ahmed was successful in getting the ‘smiling nun’ away from her all-consuming daily schedule, to contemplate on the factors that went to make CJC what it has become.

Sister Flavian talks about the beginnings of Carmel Junior College and how it turned out to be the best gift for the town, Jamshedpur. She also brings about nuns having a deep desire to serve God. She talks about the root of their strength and brings in the sayings of Mother Teresa. She goes on to talking about the fee structure of convent schools and how it was a challenging, new experience bringing in boys into the fold of Carmel Junior College. For Sister Flavian, her teachers are her biggest strength. Read more to find out the vision of Carmel Junior College.
