Sex Education : Are We Ready ?

Former Principal of Sophia College Mumbai, and author of For Youth: On Life, Love & Sex, we consider counselor Dr. Jeanette Pinto the right person to turn to for an enlightened opinion on whether sex education should be imparted in schools. Through PEP (Personal Effectiveness Programmes), she has done numerous sessions with Mumbai school students on exactly the
subject she dwells on in this very personal letter to all school principals in this country.

Dear Principals,

Being in the field of education for over four decades and having recently retired as Principal of Sophia College for Women in Mumbai, I understand the work pressures, the curriculum changes and syllabus struggles that you are constantly facing. I am aware of the problems Principals face with Management, Teaching faculty, Parents, Students, and the Non-teaching staff. To crown it all Government circulars add to their woes, leading to tensions and perhaps a breakdown. So you see I’ve been through it all.
Recently a national debate has surfaced on: Should Sex-Education be introduced in schools? Opinions are abounding, and many Principals are confused, upset, feel helpless and hopeless wondering, what really is the problem in Sex-education? Sexual promiscuity is everywhere; be it teen pregnancy, child abuse, rape, prostitution, venereal disease, HIV/AIDS; all these are surely the result of sexual ignorance. Given this alarming scenario, we need to question, “Why should sex- education not be introduced in schools?”
