The Original Mentor

The 5th of September is  actually his birthday. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the Vice President who subsequently became President of India, was nothing short of a trail-blazer in ‘edutopia’. His was not a naam ke vaste interest; he believed that it was education alone that had the power to alleviate all the maladies India was being affected by. His conviction

was that “unless we have dedicated and committed teachers to take to teaching as a mission in their lives, a good educational system cannot be developed.” Again and again he emphasized the basic educational necessity of fostering a strong relationship between teachers and students. He felt that teachers should have the “best brains in the country.” He had the ability to hold his students spell bound by his teaching abilities and that was because he always knew what he was talking about. He did not see a school as a mere “information shop” but rather, he described it as a place a student could learn to discipline intellect, will and emotions.Today as teachers, parents, principals and students struggle in their interpersonal relationships and their professional functioning, let this fast-forwarding and rapidly moving nation pause, just for a minute, to remember the original mentor who sternly told his fans not to celebrate his birthday (when they wanted to) but to observe it as ‘Teachers’ Day’
